LimeLight IPL Photofacial in Toronto: What It Treats and What to Expect
LimeLight IPL is the treatment we reach for when a guest points at their cheeks and says the words "sun spots" or "redness". It is not a laser. It is intense pulsed light, delivered through the Cutera LimeLight handpiece, and its job is very specific: find the brown and red discolouration sitting in your skin and break it up, without disturbing the skin around it.
At Beauty Room in Liberty Village, Toronto, IPL is one of our most requested light-based treatments, and also one of the most misunderstood. Guests arrive expecting something painful and leave surprised at how quick it was. This guide walks through what LimeLight IPL treats, what a session in our studio actually looks like, and what happens to your skin in the two weeks after. The photos below are from real sessions with our team.
The handpiece delivers short pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin. That light is absorbed by two things: melanin, which is the pigment in brown spots, and haemoglobin, which is the red in visible capillaries and flushing. The absorbed energy heats those targets and breaks them down, while the surrounding skin, which contains far less pigment, stays largely unaffected.
This is why IPL is called a "photofacial". It is not resurfacing the skin and it is not filling anything. It is selectively removing discolouration so the skin underneath reads as one even tone.

One device, three different problems. Most guests come in for one of these and discover the treatment quietly improves the other two along the way.
Flat brown spots on the cheeks, forehead and hands respond best of all. After a session the spots darken, almost like coffee grounds, then flake away over one to two weeks. Most guests see their strongest change here after the first or second visit.
Diffuse flushing across the cheeks and nose, and the fine capillaries that show through fair skin, absorb the light through their red colour. Redness fades gradually across a series rather than overnight, which is why we plan these as monthly sessions.
When pigment and redness sit scattered through the skin, the face reads as tired even when it is perfectly healthy. Clearing both at once is what produces the "brighter" look guests describe after a photofacial series. It is not glow in a bottle. It is simply your own skin tone, uninterrupted.
A full-face session takes 30 to 45 minutes from the moment you sit down, and about 20 of those minutes are the treatment itself. Here is the honest play-by-play.
Your esthetician starts by cleansing the skin and taking photos, so we can compare progress between sessions. You get metal eye shields, we apply a layer of cool clear gel, and the room lights come down. The gel is not a product treatment. It helps the light travel into the skin evenly and keeps the handpiece gliding smoothly.

Each pulse feels like a quick warm snap, close to an elastic band flicked lightly against the skin, followed by a flash of warmth that fades in a second or two. Areas with more pigment, usually the cheekbones, feel it more. Nobody has ever described it as unbearable, and there is no numbing required. Your esthetician adjusts the settings zone by zone, spending more time where the discolouration is dense.

Afterwards your face is warm and slightly flushed, roughly the feeling of a day in the sun without the damage. We finish with SPF, and you can go straight back to your day. Most guests book IPL on a lunch break.
IPL results follow a predictable arc, and knowing it in advance saves a lot of second-guessing in week one.
The Series
Three to five sessions, spaced about four weeks apart. Pigment usually shows change first, redness needs the full series.
Per Visit
30 to 45 minutes for a full face. Neck, chest and hands can be added to the same appointment.
Days 1 to 3
Spots darken noticeably. This is the treatment working, not a side effect. Mild warmth and flushing settle within hours.
Days 4 to 14
The darkened pigment lifts and flakes away on its own. Do not pick it. Skin underneath comes through clearer.
Downtime
None in the schedule sense. Makeup is fine the next day. Skip saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts for 24 hours.
Non-Negotiable
Daily SPF 30 or higher for the whole series. Sun exposure between sessions can undo the work and affect safety.
IPL targets pigment, so the amount of pigment in your skin matters. It performs best on fair to medium skin tones with visible sun damage or redness. On deeper skin tones the light cannot reliably tell the difference between the spot and the surrounding skin, so we usually recommend a different route, and we will say so honestly at your consultation.
Recent tanning matters for the same reason, whether it came from the sun, a bed or a self-tanner. If you arrive with a fresh tan we will ask you to wait two to four weeks. This is also why fall and winter are the busiest IPL seasons in Toronto, and why a consultation before booking a summer series is worth the extra step.

A short list of things we screen for at consultation: recent sun exposure, photosensitizing medications, active skin conditions in the treatment area, and pregnancy. None of these are unusual conversations. They are the reason the treatment stays safe and predictable.
Guests often ask whether they should book IPL, Laser Genesis or microneedling. The short version: IPL is for colour, spots and redness. Laser Genesis is for gradual refinement with zero downtime. Microneedling is for texture and indented scarring. We compared all three in detail in our treatment comparison guide, and many treatment plans at Beauty Room stage two of them across the year.
Each pulse feels like a quick warm elastic-band snap that fades within seconds. Most guests rate it as mildly uncomfortable at worst, and no numbing cream is needed. Areas with dense pigment feel more than clear areas.
Darkening is the expected first stage. The light has broken up the pigment, and the skin now pushes it to the surface, where it flakes away over one to two weeks. If your spots turn darker in the first few days, the treatment is doing exactly what it should.
Yes, with conditions. Your skin needs to be untanned at each session, and you need to commit to strict daily SPF between visits. If your summer includes a beach vacation, we would rather schedule your series around it. Bring your plans to the consultation and we will map the timing together.
The spots that flake away are gone. New ones can form if the skin keeps taking unprotected sun, because the underlying tendency does not disappear. Daily SPF keeps results holding for years, and many guests book a single maintenance session each fall.
Look at what bothers you in the mirror. If it is brown spots or visible redness, IPL is usually the stronger match. If it is overall texture and fine lines with no downtime, Laser Genesis takes it. A skin consultation settles the question in twenty minutes, and staging both across a year is a common plan.
