Eyelash Perm or Lash Lift: Same Idea, Different Tool

If you are searching for an eyelash perm in Toronto and finding mostly lash lifts, you are not looking at the wrong thing. They are the same idea, and the modern service is what an eyelash perm turned into.

The word stuck around because it describes the outcome accurately. Something is being permanently reshaped, at least for the life of that lash. What changed is the tool the lash is shaped against, and that change is the reason the two look so different in photographs.

The Chemistry Is the Same Family

Lashes are keratin fibres, structurally closer to curly hair than to anything else on the body. So the chemistry that reshapes hair is the chemistry that reshapes them.

Perming works by breaking the disulphide bonds that hold keratin in its current shape, letting the fibre take a new form while those bonds are open, then closing them again in that new position. Traditional perm solutions do this with thioglycolate, and the approach has been in use for more than seventy years. A lash lift is that same process at a much smaller scale and with far shorter processing times.

So nobody is misusing the word when they say perm. They are using the older name for a process that never stopped being what it is.

What Actually Changed: the Rod Became a Shield

The visible difference is not in the bottle. It is in what the lash is shaped against while those bonds are open.

Old eyelash perming wrapped lashes around a small rod, the same principle as a hair perm scaled down. Wrapping around a cylinder produces a curl, and if the rod was small the curl came out tight and spiralled, which is the look people remember from photos of the era and describe as crimped.

A lash lift uses a silicone shield resting against the lid instead. The lash is drawn up along the curve of that shield rather than wrapped around it, so the shape it takes is a lift from the root rather than a spiral along the length. That single change is why a modern lift reads as opening the eye while an old style perm read as curling the lash.

Why Some Lashes Resist, and It Is Not Your Technician

Some people have a lift that barely takes, and it is easy to blame whoever did it. Research into perm chemistry offers a better explanation.

Reshaping only holds if enough disulphide bonds are opened during the time the solution is on. Work on perm kinetics has found that reaction rates vary considerably between hair from different sources, and proposes that so called resistant hair is simply hair where the reaction runs slowly, so too few bonds break within normal processing time.

Applied to lashes, that means resistant lashes are a real thing rather than an excuse. It also means the fix is judgement rather than force: a slightly different solution strength or timing on the next visit, chosen deliberately. It is not permission to leave a solution on far longer, which is how lashes get over processed.

What to Ask For When You Book

Ask for a lash lift. That is what the service is called across Toronto now, ours included, and asking for a perm will simply get you the same appointment with a moment of translation first.

What is worth specifying is the result. A softer, more open lift or a tighter curl are different shield choices, not different services. Say which one you want, or bring a photo, and the decision gets made before anything is applied rather than after.

Ours start at $100 for a Lash Lift and $130 for a Keratin Lash Lift, which uses a gentler solution and adds a keratin treatment. If your lashes are fair or fade at the tips, add a tint for $25, because reshaping does nothing to colour and pale ends will swallow the definition.

One Genuine Difference Worth Knowing

Processing time on lashes is short, and that is not a shortcut, it is a safety margin. Lashes are fine fibres sitting a few millimetres from your eye, so the whole discipline of the modern service is about doing the minimum that achieves the shape.

It is also why aftercare has firm timings rather than vague advice. Keep the lashes dry for a full 48 hours, avoid oils and heavy creams near the lash line in that window, and sleep on your back if you can. We go through the whole first 48 hours in our piece on what the keratin actually does.

Is an eyelash perm the same thing as a lash lift?

Close enough that you will be booked into the same appointment. Both reshape the lash using the same underlying chemistry. The current service shapes the lash against a silicone shield rather than wrapping it around a rod, which produces a lift from the root instead of a spiral curl.

Was the old style worse for your lashes?

We would not put it that way, because the chemistry belongs to the same family and any reshaping process asks something of the fibre. What has changed is technique and timing, and the fact that a shield lets a technician work with much shorter processing than wrapping did. Over processing is the thing that damages lashes, and that is about judgement rather than era.

Why do I keep finding prices for perms that are much lower?

Usually because the listing is old, or it covers a shorter appointment with one standard shield rather than shaping tailored to your eye. Ask what shield sizes are available and whether lashes are shaped individually. That is the difference the price reflects.

How long does it last?

Our keratin lift is quoted at eight to twelve weeks. The reshaping stays on the lashes you have now and ends as those lashes are replaced, which happens gradually rather than all at once, so the effect thins out rather than dropping on a particular day.

Can I do it if I wear contact lenses?

Yes, you just take them out before the treatment starts. There are a couple of situations where we ask you to wait instead: any active eye infection or irritation needs to clear first, and if you have had laser eye surgery the guidance is to leave at least six months.
